Wine Commentary

2005 Sauvignon Blanc, Russian River Valley
Like a true Sav Blanc, this one starts off clean and crispy. Ripened green apple is the first taste to hit your palette. Tastes of strawberry swirl around on the tongue with a strawberry finish. This is definitely a fruity and lightly sweet Sauvignon Blanc. No tartness to speak of and hardly any notice of citrus. And in that respect, we found it to be refreshingly different from the norm. A great summertime wine that we loved drinking in January! While sampling Adobe Road's Sauvignon Blanc, we had mo-shu pork... a delicious combination!

2003 Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley, Sorpresa Vineyard
Initially I was concerned that my sampling group would have to really switch gears going from a Sauvignon Blanc to a Zinfandel. As it turned out, my concerns were unfounded. Like the Sauvignon Blanc, this Zin is definitely fruity. The two characteristics of fruit most apparent were melon and blackberry. And this Zin is full-bodied with hints of tobacco and chocolate. The tannins are delightfully even and the finish is smooth.

Extremely versatile, it can be enjoyed with appetizers or a complete meal. We sampled it with cracked-pepper wheat wafers and humus... absolutely wonderful! It is worth noting that this Zin is a gold medal winner of the Sonoma County Harvest Fair. Think the competition might be stiff at that event?!

Our favorite pick
We have a first... it's a tie! The group simply could not, in good conscience, pick one of these bottles over the other. Both were undeniably true to expectations for each varietal, but yet, each was also a bit more than the expected.

Do not wait too long to try these two wines. The total case production of each is tiny; the Zinfandel is just 409 and the Sauvignon Blanc is a mere 291. Join one of their wine clubs and you'll be sure to get yours!

About the winery

Owner: Kevin and Debra Buckler
General manager: Andy Podshadley
Winemaker: Franc Dusak
Creative Director: Chad Crowell

Adobe Road Winery produces award winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petite Sirah exclusively from Sonoma County sources. The tasting room is located in Petaluma, California.

Adobe Road Winery is owned by renowned sports car racer and entrepreneur Kevin Buckler and his wife, Debra. In 1995, Kevin founded The Racer’s Group (TRG) and grew it into an internationally prominent manufacturer and distributor of performance Porsche parts, while simultaneously building a career as a successful endurance sports car racer and team owner.

And that's not all!

In 1999, the Buckler's established Adobe Road Winery. Through Kevin’s good connections, he acquired grapes from some very prestigious vineyards which he handcrafts into extremely limited-production wines. And the awards have followed; Adobe Road has brought home a Silver medal in the prestigious Orange County Fair Wine Competition and winning multiple awards at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

Their Web site says it best:"With the goal of producing exceptional wines by hand-crafting small lots of red varietals exclusively from Sonoma County, the Bucklers have dedicated themselves to seeing their vision through to reality, and the results are paying off." We say "Here, here!" to that!
