Wine Commentary

2004 Viognier, Tio Pancho Ranch Vineyard
Like a classic Viognier, this one has plenty of fruits swirling around. But the surprise is the start! Everyone agreed, it has a caramel start that melts into tastes of pear, apple, and pineapple. It has a lip-smacking, crispy finish. Wonderful! This is a definite winner for Texas summers... and would be an excellent compliment to spicy Bar-B-Que.

2004 Jacques Lapin
Hints of ginger and grapefruit... with a spicy finish. This vintage of Jacques Lapin (French for Jack Rabbit) goes down easy... and in the case of our tasters, it went down quickly! Jacques Lapin is a Chenin Blanc in Texas-style. It's light and easy to drink... again, this is an excellent choice for Texas summers. It is versatile with just about any food, but would go great with catfish fixed your favorite way.

2002 El Guapo
This blended Tempranillo can be described in one word: full-bodied. OK, so maybe that's two words... the point being that El Guapo is a mouthful and then some! It has citrus (lemon and grapefruit) and black cherry swirling around from beginning to end. The full flavors of this wine really came through when we started sampling some Bandera, Texas grass-fed beef with it. Oh my.... now that's Texas in a bottle!

2005 Orange Muscat
To round off our Alamosa wine experience, we had this wonderful Muscat. This wine aperitif is a veritable fruit bouquet. Besides the undeniable orange, it also has hints of pineapple, green apple, and melon (even watermelon was mentioned). Spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg, come through with each sip. As it turns out, this wine was the perfect finish to our feast of beef and El Guapo. Be sure to ask for this when you call! At last check, Orange Muscat was not listed on their Web site.

Our favorite pick
This one wasn't easy, and we were all a bit surprised when it became obvious which one was unanimous: 2004 Viognier, Tio Pancho Ranch Vineyard. This was the bottle that everyone came back to try again. Before we knew it, it was the first empty bottle. That's always a dead give-away as to which wine everyone is drinking.

It is worth noting that a very close second was El Guapo. If we had to do it over again, this one might have won hands down.

About the winery

Owner: Jim and Karen Johnson
Manager: Jim Johnson
Wine Master: Jim Johnson
Sales & Marketing: Karen Johnson

Located in the High Valley of San Saba County, Texas, Jim and Karen Johnson are growing fruit that has historically performed well in warm climates. Indeed, they point out that they are the only Texas winery dedicated exclusively to warm climate varietals. In unforgiving Texas heat, that's what you'd call being a wise viticulturist.

At an elevation of 1200 feet in the Texas Hill Country, Alamosa Wine Cellars sits in the mountains of Texas. South winds and fog from the nearby Colorado River help cool the vineyard, thus creating an optimal growing environment for grapes from Italy, Spain and the Rhone.

And the proof of their success is in their wines. They've built quite an impressive menu that includes Sangiovese, a Primitivo blend, Chenin Blanc, Viognier, and a Tempranillo (or El Guapo, their most popular production!). Not bad, considering they're just getting started.

Have you tried Texas wine yet? If not, you'd better get on the ball. You'll want to brag to your friends of how you discovered this stuff years ago. And Alamosa Wine Cellars is building bragg'n rights!
