2006 Sauvignon Blanc, El Dorado
The first thing we noticed was the brilliant golden color of this Sauvignon Blanc in our glasses. It is fruity at first taste with just a hint of grapefruit. It's smooth and crisp, like a traditional California Sauvignon Blanc. And the finish leaves something unexpected... tastes of apple and honey collapse into a very clean finish.
2005 Barbera, El Dorado
If you've never had a Barbera, the best way to describe Boeger's is to imagine a blend consisting of Pinot Noir and Zinfandel... and more! This is a full-bodied red (complete with blackberry and black cherry) and yet has the versatility of Pinot Noir. Drink Barbera with a full meal or just drink it alone. And again, the color of this Boeger wine caught everyone's attention: a brilliant ruby red. There's a slight hint of tobacco on an otherwise clean finish.
2004 Petite Sirah Reserve, El Dorado
When was the last time you had a Petite Sirah that shook you to the core? That's the experience we had with Boeger's 2004 Reserve. Lots of fruit and full-bodied flavor, it is a "busy" wine, as they say. With so many flavors of blueberry, blackberry, cherry, pear, apple and even honey, it is an explosion of flavor on your palette. The oak barrel aging really comes through on the finish, with a slight peppery tannin aftertaste. This is a masterpiece!
2005 Zinfandel Estate Vineyard, El Dorado
After the Barbera and Petite Sirah, there was concern this Zin might not have much to offer. Not an issue at all... the Boeger Zinfandel is everything you expect in a California Zin. Rich and full-bodied with strong traits of bing cherry and chocolate. This is a Zin not to be missed!
Our favorite pick
Once again, we have a tie. The tasting group was split down the middle between the Barbera and Petite Sirah. Both vintages offer such a delightful wine drinking experience. For our tasting group, Boeger was a complete delight. Everything that we sampled was first-rate, but the Barbera and Petite Sirah were in a league of their own.
We stated this before and it bears repeating... all the wines we sampled are produced in small annual yields. Get some while you still can! Join one the Boeger Barbarians' wine club and you'll be sure to get yours!
