Wine Commentary

2006 Paso Robles Estate Cuvée
This Estate Cuvée is a blend of Marsanne (50%), Rousanne (25%) and Viognier (25%). The green apple aroma is probably the first thing you'll notice (we did!). It has a Chardonnay-like taste at first with a crispy grapefruit flavor hitting the front of your tongue. Pear and melon follow as it lays on the back of your tongue. The peppery finish is an unexpected surprise, as are the "legs" (noting the high sugar content). We paired this Estate Cuvée with Baby Bell white cheese on multi-grain crackers and brie cheese with an olive tamponade spread on cracked wheat crackers. A perfect wine for a hot summer day!

2005 Grenache
Like the Estate Cuvée, this Grenache is a blended wine: Grenache (85%) and Mourvèdre (15%). The first thing you notice is the gorgeous color; we called it rubicon red. It has a great explosive start with strong hints of blueberry and blackberry. The berry flavor swirls around on your palate; once you swallow, it leaves a clean finish. This wine is wonderful from beginning to end. It is an absolute delight! We had California Spring Rolls with Wasabi sauce and Portabello mushrooms sauteed in olive oil, basil and oregano.

2005 Mouvèdre - Hacienda
It has full body and great flavor from the beginning: black cherry with a hint of pepper. A hint of black currants lingers in your mouth until you swallow. It finishes with a clean, smooth, dry tobacco taste... not what you would expect! Typically, wines with a tobacco finish tend to linger on your tongue, but not this Mouvèdre. We paired this with mesquite-grilled turkey breast and legs along with grilled shrimp and crab legs. WOW!

2006 Paso Robles Estate Viognier
Hints of green apple and apricot come through right from the beginning. Light and crispy, smooth clean finish. A floral bouquet smell hits your nose. A light dessert wine that is perfect for the summer months. This could be paired with spicy Asian dishes.

Our favorite pick
Sampling these four Cass wines was simply wonderful. It's abundantly clear that the folks at Cass Wines are pouring themselves into every bottle. That being said, there was a clear favorite for our tasting group: the 2005 Grenache. As was mentioned, this bottle is simply wonderful from beginning to end. Beautifully delicious!
