About the winery

Owner: The Corley Family
Winegrower: Kevin Corley
Wine Maker: Chris Corley
Sales & Marketing: Stephen Corley

Thirty years ago, Jay Corley discovered an ideal location in Napa Valley to conduct his "sunshine to wine" growing philosophy. Indeed, with places like Oak Knoll, Yountville, Rutherford, and St. Helena appellations, Mr. Corley found some of the best locations to grow vineyards!

The Corley family handcrafts their wines. The results mean they can be extremely selective and highly innovative. And their three distinct labels are the proof.

Their distinctive wines with the Monticello Vineyards designation exhibit the balance for which Napa Valley wines are renowned. Recognized as the Corley family's original offering, these wines have always been produced in limited quantities.

The Corley Reserve wines represents the very finest that their family produces in the tradition of the Napa Valley varietal designation. Look for rich, ripe, full-bodied wines that truly express the variety. They produce the Corley Reserve only in years when the wines are exceptional and age-worthy and only in very limited quantities.

With the Corley Proprietary Red Wine designation, expect a deep, opulent blend with an elegant, richly textured and lingering finish.

Commentary

2004 Estate Grown Chardonnay
The Monticello Chardonnay has a smooth, floral start with hints of apple and citrus. A delightfully light Chardonnay, the finish is still crispy and even a bit spicey. This is a wonderful summertime Chardonnay that would go well with any shellfish, especially lobster!

2003 Estate Grown Merlot
This wine is, in a word, intense. If you like full-bodied, earthy Merlots, then this is your reward. At first taste, a multitude of blackberry, currants, and chocolate explode on your palette. This is no trendy Merlot. It also has an impressive oak and olive finish. This bottle is a perfect companion with ribeye steak or filet mignon (be sure to add seasoning salt and raw garlic rub).

2004 Estate Grown Pinot Noir
It starts with a flower bouquet that tickles your nose. Once your palette acclimates to it, an aroma of rose comes through. Pear and citrus are obvious on the tongue and stays for a fine finish. Nothing comes through too strong; everything is impressively even in taste and makes for a delightful experience. This Pinot would go with just about anything, but would be especially good with pork tenderloin and buttered, crispy asparagas.

2002 Jefferson Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon
Monticello's Cabernet has a smooth start and finish. And what lies in between makes this Cabernet special. Tastes of mellon and pear are evident throughout. But it's the finish that makes this one unique... Call us crazy, but we could swear we tasted a hint of fennel at the finish (fennel is also known as licorce). This Cab is still young (obviously), so you could cellar for a good 7 years by our estimate.

Our Favorite Pick
Of this lot of Monticello wines, the overwhelming choice of our tasters was the 2004 Estate Grown Pinot Noir. As was mentioned above, this wine is exceptionally even in taste and flavor. Hints of pear, citrus, and rose flora come through simultaneously. Nothing over powers. And of the four wines we sampled, this Pinot Noir had the best finish: silky smooth.

And please let us know what you think! After drinking Monticello wines or joining the wine club, tell us about your experiences using our Testimonials page.
