A small winery will usually produce just a few varietals. Such is the case with Summit Lake Vineyards. They produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Zinfandel Port.
"Emily Kestrel" Howell Mountain Cabarnet Sauvignon, 2001
This Cabernet starts out bold and peppery, with a dark chocolate flavor. It is a full-bodied wine that is synonomyous with the great tradition of California Cabernets. It has a smooth olive and oak finish that is not too heavy on the tannins.
The 2001 vintage is ready to drink now, but you could cellar it for another 5 years under optimal conditions.
A Cabernet like this is excellent with almost any main entree, including chicken, steak, or shellfish.
Howell Mountain Zinfandel, 2001
Truth be told, this one was our favorite. If you like delciously busy Zinfandels, then you'll love this bottle. Each sip brings forth hints of cherry, pear, and even sweet grapefruit. The most commonly used words to describe this Zinfandel were "cherry" and "silky."
They also produce a Zinfandel Port ("Clair Riley" Zinfandel Port). Their Port is appartently a very hot commodity as they sell out of it every year. The only way you're sure to get a bottle or two is to join their wine club!
It is often said, but here it applies: This winery is truly one of the best kept secrets in Napa!

The story of Summit Lake Vineyards begins with a love story.
Bob and Sue Brakesman purchased the 21 acre Carlo Farazzi Ranch on Howell Mountain in 1971 with a dream of ownership and a passion to make a world class wine. Twenty-five years later, the dream and the passion are an on-going reality. Known for their commitment to produce award winning Zinfandels and their hospitable down-to-earth style, Summit Lake is a true family experience.
Summit Lake Vineyard sits atop the mountain at 2300 feet, surrounded by pine forests and commands spectacular views of Napa Valley to the south and Pope Valley to the north. The soil on that side of the valley is a bit different than most of the valley. Bob feels that this unique combination of soil and the higher elevation weather imparts the complex flavor to his wines.
Indeed, the story of Summit Lake Vineyards is a love story. It's a love story of a man and woman making their mark in the wine industry while raising a family. As Bob and Sue raised their family, they raised a winery. Pouring their life into it, they successfully produced award winning Zinfandels and Cabernets for years.
Summit Lake Vineyards is a true family passion. Try their wines and you'll see; the love of family and wine are in every bottle.
